I will have about 25 students in the coming 09-10 year. Lent School is 83% free and reduced lunch; many students are learning English as a second language.
Position:
2nd grade teacher
Needs:
I am seeking a Macintosh laptop. This will be an in-class tool for the internet and word processing. I am particularly interested in and excited by the possibility of sharing Garage Band (comes with the mac) with my students so that we can collectively and individually create some amazing music that would be otherwise technically beyond their second grade abilities.
My Philosophy:
"Making a Difference, Now," and "Community, Connections, Growth." These are my mantras. My work with students centers on living life now and participating in society. To that end, we form partnerships with businesses and individuals in our community, and we get out into the world as often as possible so we can see for ourselves what's going on.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I will start my 20th year as a teacher in September, 2009. It hasn't been easy, but I didn't sign up for an easy job 20 years ago. As a teacher I like to think big and be audacious. Years from now, I want my students to remember specifically what they did in second grade, and that takes a lot of work to ensure.
College and Degrees:
Pomona College, BA, 1986
University of Washington, graduate studies, 1988-1990.
PortlandState University, MS, 2004
Favorite Books:
Tolkien, Farley Mowat, David Sedaris, PG Wodehouse,
Dickens.
Interests:
I am passionate about writing, cartooning and graphic art, tap and ballroom dance, geology, geography and astronomy, dogs, travel near and far, writing and directing musicals, language and linguistics, playing piano and other instruments, juggling, singing and acting, And chocolate. I'm passionate about chocolate. And my family--can't forget them! I love my family.
Employment History:
Been a teacher most of my adult life. Worked in a few cemeteries for a spell. Go figure.
Why Do I Teach?:
I teach to make a difference in my small corner of the world. That's it. Imagine: I get paid to explore my personal passions through sharing them with young people. I get to create opportunities for others to be wildly successful, and then step back and watch it happen. This is a terrific job.
