I will be teaching 3 sections of art (2-D and 3-D) and 3 sections of Digital Media in 2008-2009. The focus of the digital media class will be on both digital photography and videography.
Position:
Art Teacher
Needs:
My digital media classes will be learning how to manipulate digital photography and how to edit video, doing so in an artistic and expressive way. We have the lab setup (computers) and software to go forward, but we don't have the digital cameras or video cameras yet.
My Philosophy:
It is important for my students to build a vocabulary and understanding in the arts, but this is secondary to my desire for them to see how the arts can serve their needs. Teaching at an urban school with 80% of our students in poverty, my wish is that my students develop a skill at speaking their truth through the arts...finding a voice for their stories. My teaching focuses on using art to explore what they want their lives to be about in the world.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I have been teaching art for 8 years in Orlando, FL. I'm originally from a small town in Missouri and then moved to Chicago after graduating from college. I worked in the "corporate world" there for 4 years before finally realizing my calling :), moved to Florida and started teaching.
College and Degrees:
B.F.A. Truman State University
M.A. University of Central Florida
NationalBoard Certified Teacher-Art
Favorite Quotes:
Be the change you want to see in the world.
-Gandhi
Interests:
I am passionate about "making things". I love having projects going, love to crochet, and I love gardening. My own artwork is typically "functional/eclectic/sculptural".
Why Do I Teach?:
I am a teacher because I want to have a positive impact (even if small) on the future of our world. If my students are able to live a life that they love I am satisfied. This looks different for each student, but for some, learning about the arts can give them a voice which then gives them a "say" in how their lives go.
