Presently, I teach 7th grade science, however, I have also taught social studies. My classroom has a wide range of students ranging from "gifted" to special needs students. The school demographic is 41% of the students are on free or reduced lunch and presently we have a 23% student population of Hispanic students.
Position:
7th grade science
Needs:
I love to incorporate technology into my classroom projects. Presently, we have 2 large projects where we could use a classroom set of digital cameras. Our Little Book project has students writing and publishing children's books with science and language arts standards. Those books are then donated to our area head start programs and to schools in Belize and Mexico to promote literacy. To date we have donated approximately 6,000 books. Another project is our View of the Zoo where students take cameras to the Denver Zoo and take photographic evidence of standards and concepts from all the classes they studied throughout the year. The project promotes critical thinking and collaboration skills and they are working with groups. Then, they share their evidence in a power point presentation for their classmates. Presently, we are using photos from the internet or film cameras for these projects. The digital camera lab would allow us to use a more technologically advanced way of producing quality books and power points for our projects.
My Philosophy:
My philosophy of education stems from my experiences as a student, teacher, and parent. That is probably why I teach middle school. Education needs to be relevant, meaningful, and exciting. Students need to be encouraged to investigate their questions and problems by learning how to access information and apply the thinking strategies to find answers. This way they learn the tools to become life long learners and true inventors of solutions.
