Pajaro Valley High School
Hometown:
Santa Cruz
Class Information:
Room Number: E108
Students per Class: 160
Class Description:
Two tenth grade and three ninth grade classes which are using a project based learning approach. We are incorporating environmental awareness into our studies of English and work with other disciplines using some collaborative technology tools such as course websites and wikis.
Position:
English Teacher
Needs:
We need more computers to facilitate the heavy research component in our classes without dependence on a school computer lab, a cart to store/secure them, and a printer. More flip digital recorders can also be helpful to advance the short videos students are creating to broadcast rpojects to others. The computers also facilitate the ease with which we can keep our across continent collaborations with partner schools as far as communications, blog postings, and contributions to wikis which feature student work we all contribute to.
My Philosophy:
Pajaro Valley is a school that has global citizenship and promoting future caretakers of the environment as a goal for students. Our school interdisciplinaryand cross the globe partnerships serve to show students that we can all work toward a common goal (project work) while learning about other cultures and working partner styles.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I have been teaching since 1987 but have only recently adopted the project based learning model as an approach. I am an avid believer in using technology to promote cross disciplinary and cross nation collaborations. School partnerships in other countries have broadened the scope of my teaching of language arts. On a personal level, I have been an endurance athlete for 8 years now and have enjoyed testing myself in physical challenges as well. I was a cross country coach recently at PVHS for two years.
College and Degrees:
I have a Masters in Teaching from Grand Canyon University. My teaching credential in Language Arts is from University of Oregon. My Bachelor Of Arts degree is in Psychology and English & American Literature from Scripps College in Claremont, California.
Activities:
I love to run and have competed in 4 marathons. My longest cycling experience has been participating in the Aids Ride in 2007. As a triathlete, I have competed in 3 Ironman Triathlons- Austria in 2005, Ceour D Alene Idaho in 2006, and Lake Placid New York this past summer, my only unfinished event due to a knee injury.
Favorite Books:
I don't have a very favorite but I do love the writings of Barbara Kingsolver and John Irving. I have read several of their books and have always liked them.
Favorite Quotes:
It is a quote by Terri Schneider, a locally renowned endurance athlete and regards challenges. Challenge and risk are like air and water-elements that are essential to anyone who wishes to maximize their lives. Learning how to perceive challenges as exciting moments of possibility and to take risjs even in the face of fear and the unknown, are keys to our ability to thrive as humans."
Interests:
Travel, triathlon, cycling, running, music, and creating slideshows from digital pictures and videos. This latter has been a very good way for me to include what I do in the class and also outside interests. I also want to explore an exchange with our partner school in Italy for the spring and sllideshows are a way to have others see what we are doing and perhaps offer support. Communicating with other schools across the world is also a hobby now as well as part of my work.
Employment History:
San Benito High School from 1987-2004 PajaroValley High from 2004-the present
Why Do I Teach?:
I have always liked English and I find my new approach a refreshing way to make my subject matter more applicable to the real world. I also feel it is making them utilize the communication skills that will serve them better in regards to having applicable, competitive skills. Compared to others in the long run who have not had this approach, I hope they have learned much more than the subject of English in my class.
