Vermilion High School
Hometown:
Vermilion, Ohio
Class Information:
Students per Class: 35
Class Description:
I teach Broadcast Journalism for grades 9 - 12. Students will create reporter videos for our broadcast shows each day. These shows are run solely by students. They are in charge of writing their scripts, reporting, interviewing, directing, editing, and producing every aspect of what our school and community see online.
Position:
Teacher
Needs:
We are in need of cameras. This class first began about six years ago with 12 students and a few cameras. Now I am happy to say our class will soon triple in size this coming fall with over 35 students already signed up. This means we find ourselves in need of equipment to meet this exciting new growth. Our goal is to eventually have enough cameras so that every student who wants to take the class can actively participate. The absence of field cameras and outside reporting greatly diminishes the broadcast and the ability for daily active participation of all students.
My Philosophy:
As with any class, I want to prepare students for college and other career opportunities. The broadcast journalism class shares this goal and specifically works to provide students with real-life skills in the realms of journalism, media, and videography. In this class, I want to endow students with essential digital skills. Students will become a part of the digital world that surrounds them by analyzing, evaluating, and creating digital-based media. And an additional goal of the class is school and community involvement. Field cameras l allow our students to become more involved in their school and community, developing relationships through their stories.
