North Shore Middle School
Hometown:
Friendswood
Class Information:
Room Number: C200
Students per Class: 155
Class Description:
I teach 8th grade science. I have 8 periods in which I teach every other day since we are on block scheduling.
Position:
Science Teacher
Needs:
Our school is in dire need of new technology, especially in the science classroom. The district is putting an enourmopus amount of emphasis on improving student scores on benchmarks to prepare for the TAKs test. The TAKs test is the state standardized test that all 8th graders must take. The district just purchased a smartboard for the science teachers. I feel that having the accessories to accompany this new technology tool would be great. Most of my students come from low income households and have never even experienced going to a park or the zoo. I need to bring those experiences to them in the classroom.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I am a first year teacher at North Shore Middle School in Galena Park, TX. I was born here in the United States and grew up in Friendswood, TX. My grandparents immigrated here from Vietnam with ten children in 1976. The local church in Friendswood sponsored the family over from Vietnam. I come from a very large family and we are still growing. Everyone including my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, all live in Friendswood. I have about 40 cousins currently and there are more on the way. I grew up around kids and I think that is why I love teaching. I love being around kids and watching them grow. I have a passion for reading and I'm always trying to find a new hobby.
College and Degrees:
I attended the University of Houston main campus in Houston, TX. I graduated cum laude with a Bachelor's in InterdisciplinaryStudies. I am currently attending the University of Houston for my masters in Curriculum and Instruction. I will be graduating in May, 2008.

Why Do I Teach?:
As a teacher, it is my duty to create an environment that is conducive to students’ learning and development. My classroom will be safe and a place in which students can share thoughts and ideas freely. When they enter my classroom, they are all learners in my eyes. Each student will be treated with respect and dignity. I encourage individualism and diversity in the classroom. Diversity and multiculturalism will be celebrated in my classroom. I believe that collaboration is a key component of success in the classroom, in the community and among my colleagues. I will work with my students to ensure that they are receiving quality instruction. Students are encouraged to work with one another to accomplish both long term and short term goals in the classroom. Open communication and collaboration with my colleagues and administration is important to me. I will work with parents so that they always feel welcome, as they are also an educator in their child’s life. I believe I am a life long learner. I will continue to reflect and self evaluate because I feel that there is always room for improvement. I will keep up to date with my content area through professional development and through reading. Through learning more about science, I become more appreciative of the knowledge I gain. I hope to show students that science can be fun and exciting. I hope to ignite the curiosity that leads to seeking out answers. This not only applies to science, but to everyday life.
