Hahira Elementary School
Hometown:
Hahira, GA
Class Information:
Students per Class: 14
Class Description:
My class is a self-contained EIP (early intervention program) classroom. This program identifies students that could be at risk for failing fith grade. This is determined through the use of checklists completed by previous teachers. They answer questions pertaining to classroom performance and achievement, attitutude towards school, and standardized test scores. My class is much smaller than average (26-28) so I can spend more time with each student focusing on individual strengths and weaknesses.
Position:
EIP teacher/ fifth grade
Needs:
The need to differentiate for each child in my class is vital for their success. These are the children that have been "lost in the crowd." Most are not behavioral problems, but prefer to sit quietly not letting on how much difficulty they're having with reading or math. I need alternative means of instruction to grab their attention, differentiate for their needs, address their learning styles, and stir up some excitement inside of them about learning. I need hands on materials to keep them actively involved in their own learning. With the economy being as it is, and funding at an all time low, I often have to resort to creating hand made folder type centers. While these are good, technology based centers would be fantastic motivators. This is especially so, because many of my students come from lower economic home situations where technology is very limited with few computers, cameras, game systems, etc. being available.
Personal Information:
College and Degrees:
I received bachelor's degrees in psychology and middle grades (4-8) education from Valdosta State University. I recently completed my master's degree in brain based educational practices from Nova University.
Why Do I Teach?:
As a child, I loved school. I couldn't understand why anyone would not! As an young adult, I began to see and understand the many contributing factors that would cause a child's negative view towards school. I vowed to do my best as an elementary school teacher to create a positive, safe, and warm environment in which children would look forward to coming to every day and to help them to love school as much (or almost as much) as I do.
Percent of Students are:
