My classroom is specifically designed to meet the educational and behavioral needs of students with autism and other developmental disorders. Our access to technology is limited at this time to my laptop, a decade-old desktop computer, a second-hand inkjet printer, and a digital camera borrowed from the school's computer teacher. We certainly do our best with what we have, but we could do so much more with updated resources.
Position:
special education teacher
Needs:
Due to the nature of autism, my students are hard to reach. Computer software designed to teach chidlren basic language, math, reading, and problem solving skills could engage my students in learning activities in ways that other methods can't. A digital camera of our own and a way to print color pictures would increase my ability as a teacher to create meaningful learning materials (flashcards, books, picture communication symbols, etc) and also allow the students to experiment with photography and self-expression.
Personal Information:
Why Do I Teach?:
I can't imagine myself not in the field of special education. I have known since I was about 9 years old that I wanted to teach students with special needs. Specializing in work with children with autism came somewhat later, but this is truly the field I am meant to be in.
