Class Description:
General Elementary Music from Pre-K through Grade 5 including two choirs and guitar classes through Little Kids Rock.
Position:
Music Teacher

Flip camera and accessories
My Philosophy:
Children learn best when they are having fun. My goal is to make my lessons so engaging that they can't help but learn! In my room, I try to make it more fun to follow the rules than to break them. Technology is very motivating to this generation and I am harnessing it in every way possible. If I had a flip camera and a MIDI keyboard, I would have a full complement of technology in my classroom.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I am in my 21st year as a public school elementary music specialist. I have two sons in their 20's. One is severely disabled. The other was identified as gifted at age 3 and attended gifted preschool where I now teach. That was 20 years ago. I am fortunate to be in such a great school and rewarding profession!
College and Degrees:
Southwest Texas State University (now called Texas State University) in San Marcos Texas; Bachelor of Music Education with all-level (K-12) certification in vocal music.
Activities:
Besides teaching music, I have presented to other teachers in my district, region and state on classroom management. I try to implement the principles of Dr. Haim Ginott and have begun to use Whole Brain Teaching very successfully. I live in the iUniverse and love anything Apple! I enjoy my iMac at school and my MacBookPro at home. I am also an advocate for people with disabilities and a member of Louisiana Partners in Policymaking. I enjoy writing, especially poetry, reading, photography and gardening.
Favorite Books:
A Confederacy of Dunces; Chita by Lafcadio Hearne, fiction by Ann Tyler
Favorite Quotes:
"How parents and teachers talk tells a child how they feel about him. Their statements affect his self-esteem and self-worth. To a large extent, their language determines his destiny." Dr. Haim Ginott "Isn't it strange that princes and kings And clowns that caper in sawdust rings And common people like you and me Are builders for eternity? Each is given a book of rules A shapeless mass; a bag of tools. And each must fashion; ere life has flown A stumbling block or a steppingstone." author unknown
Interests:
Teaching, Music, Apple computers, photography, singing with Shreveport Chamber Singers, gardening, disability advocacy
Employment History:
1974-1979 Harlandale ISD San Antonio, TX 1980-1981 Dickinson, TX ISD 1981-1984-Galveston,TX ISD 17 years raising my own children 2001-2010Caddo Parish School Board, Shreveport, Louisiana
Why Do I Teach?:
I have always loved music, especially singing. I was fortunate to have wonderful music educators when I was a child in Texas. My first grade teacher actually had a doctorate in music! My teachers inspired me to become a music specialist. I teach because I know that music brings joy into the lives of the children in my many classes. I have found a method called Whole Brain Teaching that makes learning even more fun. I can teach anything through music. Although I focus on my art, I constantly cross the curriculum to enhance the academic program as well.
