Class Description:
I teach sixth grade social studies. In addition, I coach other teaches in the use of technology and 21st century skills in the classroom. We have a team of teachers that form our technology integration team that strive to implement and test strategies in their classroom that can be helpful to the teaching and learning process in all of our classrooms.
Position:
Technology & Curriculum Coach
Needs:
We have successfully implemented the use of iPads for group collaboration, critical thinking, creativity and communication projects. However, the set is in high demand. We need more to make our vision reality for more students.
My Philosophy:
My philosophy of education encompasses multiple perspectives that intertwine to provide quality learning opportunities for diverse learners. The overarching themes include the constructivist theory, multiple intelligences, 21st century skills, data driven instruction, and diversity. The elements of my philosophy combine to provide diverse learning opportunities for the diverse learners within each class. I wish to instil in all my students, whether young or old, the desire to gain knowledge, express themselves creatively and strive for excellence in all their endeavours. I want my students to know that there are no boundaries to their capabilities. To attain this, one must provide a multi-cultural education while addressing multiple intelligences, 21st century skills, and facilitating project based learning. The Constructivist Theory My philosophy of education is rooted in the constructivist theory of teaching and learning. Constructivist learning environments place emphasis on the construction of knowledge rather than the reproduction of knowledge, placing more of the responsibility of learning on the learner. This includes “discovery” learning experiences and project based learning experiences. These experiences are meaningful and can be connect to real world problems. "I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand." -Confucius In my current position as curriculum and technology integration coach and my former capacity at the University of Rio Grande, I encourage teachers to epitomize quality teaching. One key aspect of this includes teachers acting as a facilitator of education within student centered classrooms. Multiple Intelligences The theory of multiple intelligences was developed by Dr. Howard Gardner, professor of education at Harvard University. Dr. Gardner proposes that intelligence is far more than mathematic and linguistic intelligence that schools often focus upon. He suggests eight different intelligences to account for a broader range of human potential in children and adults. These intelligences are: • Linguisticintelligence ("word smart") • Logical-mathematicalintelligence ("number/reasoningsmart") • Spatialintelligence ("picture smart") • Bodily-Kinestheticintelligence ("body smart") • Musicalintelligence ("music smart") • Interpersonalintelligence ("people smart") • Intrapersonalintelligence ("self smart") • Naturalistintelligence ("nature smart") This theory suggests that people possess a variety of intelligences and we should place equal attention on all areas of intelligence. Material should be presented and experienced in a variety of ways, incorporating all multiple intelligences. Diversity I encourage teachers to incorporate methods for addressing the individual needs and cultural diversity of students into their pedagogy. “U.S. society is becoming increasingly diverse and that diversity is reflected in its classrooms,” says Weinstein (November 2003, p. 266), former classroom teacher and Professor of Education at Rutgers Graduate School of Education. Additional significance lies in the fact that most teachers in the United States are White, according to the Digest of Educational Statistics 2002, “eighty-four % of our teachers in public and private schools (excluding pre-kindergarten teachers) were White-non Hispanic in the year 2000” (p. 40). With a rapidly expanding diverse population of students taught by predominately-Whiteteachers, it is important to explore the positionality of teachers on the topic of Whiteness within the realm of multicultural education. Teachers will need to be prepared to teach all their students effectively, and they should be aware of their race in order to be conscious of how it affects their teaching.
