I teach primary self contained special education. My class consists mainly of developmentally delayed students. All of my students have great difficulty in reading. Identifying letters and their sounds to blending sounds to create words are major obstacles for my students. All math skills need to be hands on with manipulatives and visual aids as much as possible.
Position:
self contained special education teacher
Needs:
A major need for my class is to have as much of our curriculum hands on as possible. Technology integration is a major add-on for our school district this year. I would love to have technology to meet the needs of the students in my classroom.
My Philosophy:
My students miss out on so many activities by not being with their homeroom class. I believe my students have a right to a great and memorable education outside the general classroom. My students have a right to an education that is as similar to the general education class as possible. I really want my students to achieve many educational and personal goals while in my class. They deserve to be proud of themselves and stand up tall as they reach for the stars!!!!!

Employment History:
I started working when I was 16 years old. I worked at Piggly Wiggly, our town's grocery store, throughout high school and college. I worked there for 6 years. I am now employed by the Nettleton School District. The 2008-2009 school year will be my 5th year.
Why Do I Teach?:
I teach because I want to make a difference in children's lives. While I was growing up, school was my safe haven from the life I lived at home. I was happy and content more at school than I ever could have been at home. I want my students to be happy to be at school and always remember that someone cares: Mrs. Alred cares.
