This is a severe autism classroom. All five students are low-functioning / non-speaking.
Position:
Teacher
Needs:
The severe autism classroom that I teach in currently has no assistive technology for students to use. The five students in the program are low-functioning, non-speaking students who need iPads in order to communicate with the instructor and instructional assistants. The use of iPads is necessary for students to meet the California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA) standards. Traditional teaching methods are ineffective in the severe autism classroom, as sensory dysfunction requires students to provide feedback through methods only available in an iPad application called Proloquo2Go.
Ipasted a link to a 60 minutes episode called "Apps for Autism" that reports major communication break throughs for students with severe autism.

My Philosophy:
I believe that all students should be provided with the means to reach their full potential. Students with severe autism lack the ability to communicate through traditional ways. These students are able to make life changing improvements and become learners through the use of assistive technologies.
