Why I need this:
Citizen Schools is a national 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that taps into a reservoir of out-of-school time, the power of hands-on learning, the passion of aspiring educators, and the talents of adult volunteers to build a foundation of success for students. This set of digital cameras would be used in Citizen Schools' unique "apprenticeships." In this central component of our model, students learn about new fields and careers from a teaching team consisting of one or more community volunteers (Citizen Teachers) paired with a Citizen Schools staff or AmeriCorps Team Leader. Each apprenticeship culminates in a public showcase known as a WOW!, in which students “teach back” what they’ve learned to their peers, families, and communities. Apprenticeship topics vary widely, with about half of apprenticeships covering STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and math). Students in a “Mock Trial” apprenticeship might work with volunteer lawyers from a leading firm, studying a case, writing opening and closing statements, and preparing questions for witnesses as they get ready for their WOW!, a trial at a local courthouse in front of a real judge. Students in “Math Mysteries: Ciphers, Games, and Magic” might work with Google engineers to decipher codes, develop strategies to win games, and master magic tricks using essential mathematical concepts. At their WOW!, they will test guests’ abilities to solve their puzzles before explaining how they conquered each problem using math. Each student selects two apprenticeships each semester from among a dozen or more offered at their school, allowing them to “try on” four different career paths during the school year. These cameras would be used for apprenticeships like Activist Art, Journalism, In Your Dreams (in which students publish an online magazine), and Photography. |
