I teach 5th grade Math and Science to two groups of about 23 students (switching with my partner teacher for half of the day). My classroom population changes each year. Last year I had a clever group of ESL students. This year I will have regular education and special education students. Starting in the 2011-2012 school year, our classroom size has increased to allow up to 30 students. Usually over half of my class room population is considered "at-risk" for reasons of disabilities, economic challenges, disciplinary issues, or emotional hardships.
Position:
5th grade teacher, BBR consultant
Needs:
The pace of instruction is very high in 5th grade. Equipment and learning tools to help engage learners and work at an efficient pace would multiply success and positive perceptions.
My Philosophy:
My classroom is very family-oriented in that we build relationships and behavioral structures to function as a caring and connected group working towards a common goal. Our goal in 5th grade is to learn as much as possible, communicate effectively, establish relationships, get out of our "comfort zone" and push ourselves to achieve.
