Our alternative program serves middle grades students who have been long-term suspended from regular public schools for behavior infractions.
Position:
Science Teacher/Chair
Needs:
We need technology that is not already older than our students in order to teach them 21st century skills.
My Philosophy:
There is a decision point that lies at the heart of teaching—am I going to strive to awaken inquiry within my students, and then trust them and support them in their exploration, or am I going to settle for just telling them something? This is not a decision to be made lightly, because once inquiry is loosened the lesson takes on a life of its own and the teacher is no longer fully in charge. It is, however, within that vibrant interaction of the inquiring students, the facilitating teacher, and the daily life of the classroom, that profound learning is most likely to occur.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I come to middle school teaching as a second career after working as a research scientist, primarily in the nuclear power industry. I love teaching because it provides me with daily opportunities to make a difference in the world. I love introducing students to the wonders of the universe and the powerful tools science offers for learning about that universe. I also think science offers a great set of values for students—integrity, rigor, the humility needed to accept knowledge as tentative yet predictive. Yet, the most important thing I teach isn’t science, its children.
College and Degrees:
University of Wyoming, B.A. Anthropology
Universityof Washington, B.S. Scientific and Technical Communication, M.A. Technical Communication
UNCWElementary Education Certification, also certified in middle grades math and science.
Activities:
Family life, kayaking, bicycling, camping, hiking, dog training (agility).
Favorite Books:
Works by Mark Twain, John Steinbeck, Marcus Borg, Barbara Kingsolver, Connie Willis.
Employment History:
Twelve years in elementary and middle grades education. Prior to that, contract research and training, mostly in nuclear power industry, and some university teaching.
Why Do I Teach?:
I am called to teach and to reach out to those on the fringes of society. I love science and discovery and teaching science to the wonderful middle school students served by our alternative school for students with behavior challenges.
