Students use digital cameras to take photographs of plants and wildlife in the school yard instead of collecting specimens. Photos are then printed and specimens identified using field guides in the classroom. Students then make posters with their photos and names of the organisms they identified for display in the classroom.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Math-Students can count the numbers of different types of species found and analyze data using a biodiversity index such as the Shannon diversity index.
Follow-Up
Students can compare posters from previous years to see if the numbers and types of species remain constant, or if the school yard ecosystem is changing.
