Activating Strategy:
Writing prompt- What does Earth Day mean to you? How can taking action now make a difference for future generations? Students will discuss their responses.

Teaching Strategies:
Students will be given media center time to research different aspects of environmental statistics including benefits of recycling, pollution and the affects on climate and weather, Smart Cars, what "Going Green" means, environmental health risks, saving water and other ways individuals can make a difference, etc.

Once students have obtained research, they will work in small groups to brainstorm a theme and concept related to Earth Day 2011: A Billion Acts of Green.

Students will then create a story board for a Public Service Announcement (PSA). Ignorance is one reason that many people do not take an interest in the environment. By creating a PSA, students will be able to educate and spread the word about the importance of helping the environment.

Students must be able to capture the essence of their message in their video. They must think about how an audience would respond to their work and take into consideration how they present their message.

After creating a storyboard, students will then film and edit their piece. The PSA will be aired on our morning announcement program for the school to see. The PSAs will also be posted on our Schooltube Channel so that community members can also learn.

Summarizing Strategy:
Students will write in their journals reflecting on what they have learned, how they will personally take action in their own lives, and how the experience has affected them
Comments
We are a Television Broadcasting class. We have limited supplies so students usually work in large groups. We have a limited number of cameras, out dated editing machines, one working Apple Power G5 (out of two). We were recently given left over PCs, but we have no editing software on them.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Students can utilize information from their Science classes, use computer research used in Technology and English research classes.
Follow-Up
In addition to airing the videos on our morning program and schooltube channel, students can also create an advertisement commercial for our Interact Club's annual Go Green concert.
