School: Turrentine Middle School, Burlington, NC
Planned By: kevin wellman
Original Author: kevin wellman, Burlington
Day 1:
Students will weigh in on scale to get his / her weight. (Health BMI)

Day 2-5:
Students will need to convert pounds into ounces. (Math)
Using a scale they will get the amount of clay needed to mold his/her body. (Math)
Students will use his/her imagination to create thier person as well as give it a
name. (art)
*Modification - students that don't feel comfortable about their weight can
create other objects, like animals.... (art)
Homework - Students will go home and discuss family history.(heart disease,
high/low blood pressure, cancer, etc.) This will used to add to clay models.

Day 6-7
Students will work in groups of 3 -5 (depending on size) to create a background
scenes. This will be set up so that each person's clay model can can placed in so
that they can video it at its starting point thru its transformation.

Day 8- ???:
Once all projects are set, students can know work on his/her own body in PE
classes. Students will get two weeks of activity and a constant reminder about
the project. This should help motivate them because they don't want to add clay
after the weigh in. Students will be weighed in after every two weeks. Students
will add or subtract clay depending on his/her weigh in. I would use different
color clay for each weigh in so that they will have to place it on his / her body
where they think the weight went. This will continue throughout the year.

Last few Days:
Students will create a story about their transforamtion and what they did
throughout the year. This story will be told in the video.

Comments
This will be a great lesson for kids. Students will be thinking about what they are eating and how much exercise they will always be reminded.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Math teachers can do the conversions and BMI to compare students. Also graph the difference between boys ad girls, grade level vs grade level and make charts. When they are done, the art teacher can help with the creation of the clay bodies. Teachnology deptartment can do the video of the progress. English teachers can help write the stories. PE department will do it's part on exercise and eating habits.
Follow-Up
The clay models can be use the next year when summer is over. Reminding students that they will be weighed in when they get back to school.
