Lesson Plan Title: Helpers in Your Community
Age Range:
Grade 3-5
Overview and Purpose: Students will gain an understanding of the makings of a "community" and the people who give of their time and talents to help others.
Objective: The student will be able to name at least five occupations that help people in a community by using technology websites as navigation for information.
Resources:
Chart paper
Markers
Journals
Computer access
Activities:
Talk about your local community and ask students to name people who help people in their community (fireman, mayor, garbage man). Start a website list for careers and occupations as they name people in their community. Ask them to list the ways those people help and explore if there is any overlap in the jobs. Divide students into 5 groups. Give each student a website to explore their particular area (derived from student generated list) Place information on chart and display in classroom.
Have students write in their journals about their favorite community helper.
Wrap Up:
Field trip opportunity! You could take your students to tour a local facility (Fire Station, Museum, Courthouse, etc.), and have them write an essay about what they observed during the experience. Students could also join their parents for National Job Shadowing Day on February 2nd.
