Students will participate in the Remember the Veterans! project. Students will learn first-hand from veterans who have served the US in combat and non-combat settings. It will encompass many standards from our 2nd grade curriculum. They will learn about our country and in many cases, other parts of the world, depending on where the veteran served. Students will brainstorm questions to ask the veterans and will be reminded of what type of questions would be appropriate to ask. A list of veterans will be provided to the class by the teacher and we will review locations on a map of where the veterans served. The students will have instruction on how to use each type of camera and/or video camera. After each interview, the video and photographs will be burned to a CD and sent to the Library of Congress to have the veterans' stories on file for anyone to learn about.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This project can be used in conjunction with Veterans Day.
Geography-students can study the various countries where veterans have served
Technology-students can create Photo Stories/Movie maker videos about their veteran and/or the country/countries where they were stationed; students might research the vehicles used during the time period their veteran served; students might research the various brances of the Armed Forces; students will learn photography and videography skills that can be used when creating other projects.
Follow-Up
*Students will share their videos with the class.
*Students will compile interviews and send DVDs/CDs to the veterans who were interviewed.
