STEAM Lesson for Making Butter

Objectives:
• Students will be able to identify the changes and various states of matter.
• Students will be able to accurately of measure length of time using stop watch for the butter process.
• Students will be able to record and graph date.
• Students will be able to engineer an apparatus to solve a problem.

Materials:
• 6 stop watches
• 18 small glass jars with lids (baby food size)
• 4 quarts of heavy whipping cream
• Salt
• Science journals and paper
• Copy of The Butter Battle Book by Dr. Suess
• Various engineering and art supplies
• Computer, speakers, projector, projector screen
• Access to YouTube


Procedures:
Day 1
1. Gather materials (see above)
2. Prefill half of the glass jars with heavy whipping cream and sit aside in a cool place.
3. Secure jars with lids
4. Access video on You Tube https://www.google.com/#q=making+butter+robert+krampf
5. Discuss
changes to matter
6. Instruct students to follow step make butter
7. Pass out prefilled jars to students
8. Pair up student and give each pair a stop watch
9. Instructs students to take turns churning and timing and recording the process of making butter
10. Encourage students to taste butter for student taste survey
11. Record opinions on a data table
12. Have students take home butter.
Day 2
1. Read The Butter Battle Book
2. Discuss intricate machines illustrated within the book
3. Review butter making process from Day 1
4. Discuss problems that make have arose such as ‘taking too long’ or ‘sore arms’
5. Discuss innovations of how inventions are created to solve problems or improve quality of life
6. Brainstorm with class possible solutions and creations for better churning process
Ex. Taping the jar to a ball and toss it back and forth
7. Have students illustrate a simple machine or apparatus in the science journals
8. Allow students to work in small groups to create one of their ideas for butter making machine approved by teacher
9. Using various art supple/engineering supplies have student construct
10. Have students present ideas to the class
Assessments:
Day 1: Grade science journal with rubric created by teacher.
Day 2: Grade presentation with rubric created by teacher.

Accommodations:
• Allow ESOL and students with disability to work with a partner using altered rubric made by teacher.
• Allow hearing and listening devices and caption video.
• Provide visual guide of steps.
• Behavior: Allow students to work alone.
• Gifted students will have to design on paper a machine to solve another everyday problem.

We will begin the lesson by reading The Butter Battle Book by Dr. Suess. This book can be borrowed from the public library
