Step One
Bring in information about local attractions that will teach the students about their town.

Step Two
Send home notes to families asking for volunteers to visit some of the attractions. Then allow the students to check out the class digital cameras to make a photo diary of the their experience when visiting the location.

Step Three
When all photo diaries are returned to school meet with small groups to create a Hometown Book.

Step Four
Make a take home bag that has the new class book, one of the digital cameras and a composition book. The student can share the book with his or her family and then the child can take a picture of the family with the camera. Last he can record in the book about one of the attractions his family would like to visit.

Note: Make a check out card for the bag to keep up with who has already taken it home.
