Our third grade students are required to learn and apply the four types of sentences in their daily writing activities. Students will have a more personal connection to a photograph they have taken themselves.
The project begins with instruction and practice of writing the four types of sentences. Students are then given cameras and the class will roam the school grounds looking for suitable "photo" subjects. Any outdoor, or indoor, area can be used. Once the students have found and taken their photographs, the next phase of the project will begin.
Students will view their photographs, using computer programs, and make any necessary adjustments to them. When they are satisfied with the photograph, they will print it onto photo paper.
The next step is to begin constructing the four types of sentences about the photograph. Two sentences of each type are required. When the students are satisfied with the sentences they have written, they will conference with the teacher for editing, and make any needed corrections.
Now the students are ready to type their sentences on the computer, in their choice of font. The students will then print the sentences.
The sentences and the photograph will be trimmed, and edged if desired, to create a presentation on black construction paper. Once completed, the projects will be displayed in the hallway.
Comments
I feel students will be apt to write more if they have chosen the subject matter of the photograph themselves.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This project's photographs could be used at a later time to create stories. The students could use the photograph as "what happened in the middle" of the story. The beginning of the story would be what happened just before the photo was taken, and the end could be what happened just after the photo was taken.
