Subject(s): Art, Technology, Photography
Grades 6 through 8
School: Howard Middle School, Orlando, FL
Planned By: Clinton McCracken
Original Author: Clinton McCracken, Orlando
Students will be introduced to artwork from a local museum that tells a story, engaging in a discussion of how art can be used to communicate a message. They will then conduct interviews of 5 people that have known them the longest, asking specific questions that we design in class (student led). These interviews will be designed to show students what other people see as important events in their lives. After this, we will look at more artwork that uses symbolism to represent different ideas. Then students will plan what symbols (or situations) could represent the major events in their lives. They will then use digital cameras to photograph these situations/symbols. After this, students will use digital photo editing software to create an overall unified design to all their photographs, print them, and arrange into a photo montage. Student work will be displayed at school along with a written explanation of their story.
Comments
I teach at a high needs, urban school (80% poverty). This lesson will help to introduce students to the digital camera, will immediately involve families in the school, and will expose students to how art can be used to communicate a message.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Social Studies... stories of important historical individuals, taking photos of things that symbolize important points in history.
