Introduce the text Sound All Around to your students. Discuss if it is a fiction or non-fiction text. Though it looks like a fictional text with illustrations rather than photographs it is a non-fiction text. Brainstorm a list of common non-fiction text elements are missing. Elements that are missing include: Table of Contents, Headings, Labels, Glossary (with accented words within text).

Revisit the text page by page (I scanned it into my computer and did this on the interactive white board). As a group, decide on headings that are appropriate and what pages the heading is appropriate for. Add a page for a table of contents and list the headings with the page it starts on. Just chunking the text into categories like this will most likely take a full 45 minute lesson.

Revisit the text and highlight words that could be added to a glossary. Add a page for the glossary and have students develop a definition of the word that they all agree with. This section will take approximately 30 minutes.

You may want to also extend this and add an index or labels/captions to the text.
