Subject(s): Music, Photography, Podcasting
Grades 2 through 5
School: Whitehall Elementary School, Anderson, SC
Planned By: Nancy Arrington
Original Author: Nancy Arrington, Anderson
STANDARDS:
I. Singing; II. Performing on Instruments; IV. Composing and Arranging; VII. Evaluating

PROCEDURES:
Students will review and evaluate performances by students of their same age. They will discuss the performances and plan their own acts. Students will be encouraged to compose and/or arrange original music, sing, dance, and play instruments.

Students in grades 2 through 4 will present their talent for their peers on a stage in the music room.

Fifth grade students will audition for judges from the music department of a local university. They will choose a theme, plan the staging, elect an emcee, and present a show for the student body, parents, and friends.

Teams of students will use digital cameras and recorders, both still and movie, to capture the Talent Day events and interview participants. They will work together to download their respective pictures and movies, create a slide show for podcast or dvd, display them on the school's music class website, and broadcast them school-wide on the weekly student-produced school news show.

ASSESSMENT:
Students will view their own performances for self-assessment; Critique their peers' performances for peer-assessment, and create a slide-show/dvd/podcast for portfolio-assessment.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
The students will work in music class for the performances, in the computer lab with the computer facilitator for slide show/dvd and podcasting, and with the media specialist with broadcasting the news show.
