1. Read several myths as a class and add information to a class chart of mythical characteristics. Suggested categories: a. Name of Myth b. Good Characters (Protagonists) c. Bad Characters (Antagonists) d. Magic or Fantasy e. Conflict f. Resolution Digital Hint: If this chart is made in WORD or PowerPoint it can be displayed by digital projector as it's being made, then printed and distributed for each student to use later in the unit.
2. Student pairs or teams use the internet, or books, to read and choose a favorite myth and add the details to the class chart. Before starting they need to discuss which part they will be responsible for and how they will make the work fair for all team members.
3. Pairs make ABC pages for a class myth book using a color printer and embellishing with self-drawn details. (see student instructions)
4. Students present their page to the whole class using a document camera to project original artwork onto a screen.
5. Later the class book is scanned and made into a PowerPoint presentation.
Teacher hints the same letter may be used more than once (Athena, Artemis and Apollo), and some letters may not be used at all.
Student Instructions and Rubrics (can be displayed on digital or overhead projector, or printed for each team).

My class, in a Title I school, is motivated by learning from each other. The document camera and color printer/scanner will allow us to share student work in their own hand writing; we can edit and revise writing as a group; and we can praise each other's unique projects displayed on the screen. Almost all of my classroom lessons are integrated with Social Studies and Science to make learning enjoyable, high interest, full of rich vocabulary, and easier for students to make connections with classroom learning and the real world. |
Cross-Curriculum Ideas |
Mythical Money Math - "Purchase" mythical characters (or character traits) by paying a different amount for consonants and vowels with manipulative money. So "kindness" has 2 vowels and 6 consonants; multiply and add the cost (choose difficulty by grade) and pay the total to a chosen banker. |
Follow-Up |
1. Keep the ABC book where students can refer to it. Consider putting the pages in sheet protectors for lengevity.
2. Mini-books can be printed for each student as an end of unit keep-sake. If enough room is left on the bottom of the page it would be a fun place to include autographs. |
