Focus: Expanding classroom walls while improving writing skills through real world writing opportunities:ePals and Mystery Skype, and combining computer coding.

Mystery Skype Community Member- (Free sign-up)
August - the students are introduced to their ePals and they will learn about their country, culture etc. through weekly communication .
The students will also be introduced to Mystery Skype through Skype in the classroom.

Through out the year the students will be collecting information about their ePals and their country, also collecting information about the different states they have connected with through Mystery Skype.
April-The students will create an adventure for Dot and Dash interactive robots through the data they have collected about their ePals. The students will work in groups of four, but they will individually create a coding adventure for Dot and Dash.Each group will be given a floor-size world map for Dot and Dash to travel across while sharing information about their ePals' Country. The students will use the audio component of the robots and they will record their information and Dash will share the information. The students will use coding to get Dash and dot to their destination on the world map.
The students will video ( using the IPAD Mini) their Dot and Dash Adventures and create a movie that will be shown at the 5th Grade Dot and Dash Film Premier Festival in May. They students will invite family and the community.
Comments
Connecting globally with other fifth graders will improve the students written and oral communication skills.
