During the monthly theme of Community our class goes on many community walks. This allows the students to become familiar with different people, places, and actions in their community environments.

1. Students will take Digital SLR camera along on a community walk. Students will identify words printed throughout the community (ie Stop on a stop sign, grocery on a store, subway on a station, mail on the post office, etc.)
2. We will then photograph these words.
3. Upon returning to the classroom the students will edit and print out their photos.
4. Depending on the level of the student they will design a poster or a book with their pictures.
5. Students will then use this resource as a dictionary as they complete writing assignments around a community theme.
Comments
Students can keep these for future help with writing.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Students can use this process to create picture dictionaries for other subjects. (For example, they can photograph elements of science experiments to then match with written definitions.)
Follow-Up
Students can share the books with families, practice reading for fluency, use as a model for future dictionary making.
