Student skills
Make connections between and across multiple texts of various genres.
Analyze the function of stylistic elements in traditional and classical literature from various cultures.
Analyze the function of voal intonation and body movement in oral recitations.
Compare and contrast the historical and cultural settings of differing literary works.
Create oral stories from written myths or legends that reflect the student’s own culture or background.

I will begin this unit by having my students recall the tenets of mythology. They will then compare the heroes in the stories we have read to the heroes in their own culture. Students will then write a script about one of these heroes and create a multimedia project based on their story.

Students may choose to create an action video, video using still pictures andrecorded sound, a PowerPoint presentation, or a podcast of their story. Students will use the writing workshop process in the creation of the story and the presentation.
Comments
This unit will allow my students to compare the written myths and legends of two cultures to see how differing people are similar and to show how people have retained certain values despite centuries of change.
