Essential Question: Why did the American colonists desire independence from Great Britian and how did they achieve their goal?
Lesson Title: Hear Ye! America Comes Alive
Procedure: 1. Activate students' backyard knowledge regarding the American Revolution. Provide students to share what they know/understand about this period of history. Intoduce students to "George vs. George"; make connections and elaborate on the ideas mentioned during the reading of the book.
2. Introduce the following American Revolution major events: a. French/Indian War b. Bunker Hill c. Boston Tea Part d. First Continental Congress e. Paul Revere's Ride f. Battles of Lexington and Concord g. Second Continental Congress h. Declaration of Independence
3. Discuss as a class the above marjor events and create a timeline of these events. Begin with the years 1754 and write "French/Indian War" under it. End with the year 1776 and the signing of the "Declaration of Independence". Instruct students to add the dates of the other major events and label them.
4. Assign students to illustrate one of the major events of the American Revolution timeline. Each illustration should represent the event. One illustration from each major event will e added to the timeline to summarize the events that led to the Revolution.
5. Once the timeline is complete, make sure the students know the importance of the "domino effect" of history. They need to understand that one major event led to the next.
