I use this lesson as the introduction to the Civil War. It helps my students gain a greater understanding of the battle between brother vs brother.
Have students listen to the podcast of "This I Believe" located on the NPR website. The podcast is of a 5 year old boy who was asked to bring in 100 things to class to celebrate 100 days of school. He responded by writing 100 things he believed. After students have finished, lead a discussion on how we develop our own values and beliefs. Teachers can adapt accordingly to grade level. Students will then make a list of their beliefs. Time should be given to allow students to process the meaning of true beliefs and where they come from. The teacher should participate also. Background music can be played to create a more thought provoking atmoshpere. Once finished, students may read some of their writing aloud. Additional lessons may include turning students writing into a class book.
