Dear Future Writing Assignment

Dozier Elementary and the Vermilion Parish School District buried a fifty year Time Capsule. The second grade sections each wrote a letter (Dear Future) to students in 50 fifty years.

Goal: Students will be writing to future residents through a Time Capsule.

Time: One week

GLE's: Subject: Writing

a. Discuss past, present, future
b. Writing conventions
c. Higher order thinking skills (students will have to imagine new inventions, etc.)

Plan:

1. Discuss past, present and future.

2. Show photographs, videos, etc. that showed life in the 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's. (Suggestion: Visit a local museum with artifacts from time periods might be a good idea.)

3. Brainstorm ideas about the future. What items might still be around. Which ones will not.

4. Students will write a "Dear Future" letter for those alive in 2060 to read. They will explain about their lives now.

5. Graphic Organizer: Component: Complete a four square writing template or interactive (graphic organizer) 4 Square writing interactive links, templates is included.

6. Writing: Use four square template to write rough draft (See Four Square Writing Link)

7. Type letters on the computers and/or blog it.

8. Take student photos and insert them in the letter.

9. Film students reading reports using flip camera.
