All About Me!

Goal: Writing activity using KidsWorks Deluxe. Each student will write sentences describing themselves and creating a booklet with the program. The students can also use a premade template (MS Word) to type about themselves too. Using a digital camera, the students will insert a photo of themselves.

Grade Level Expectations:

22. Create simple text using prior knowledge by drawing, dictating to the teacher, and/or writing using developmental/inventive spelling (ELA-2-E3)
23. Use classroom resources (e.g., word walls, picture dictionaries, teachers, peers) to support a writing process (ELA-2-E3)
25. Write informal notes, lists, letters, personal experiences, and stories using developmental/inventive spelling and pictures (ELA-2-E4)
27. Use developmental/inventive spelling, supported by pictures, to represent a word or idea or to respond to a life experience or a text read aloud (ELA-2-E6)
28. Demonstrate an understanding of letter placement in text by writing letters and words from left to right and top to bottom on a page (ELA-3-E1)
31. Identify and use uppercase and lowercase letters at the beginning of own first and last names (ELA-3-E2)
34. Express feelings, needs, and ideas in complete sentences (ELA-4-E1)
36. Relate an experience or creative story in a logical sequence (ELA-4-E3)
42. Use a computer mouse to navigate the screen (ELA-5-E1)
44. Use technology to produce class work (ELA-5-E4)

Lesson:

1. Have a word wall set up with many words you think the students may possibly use. (boy, girl, tall, short, long hair, short hair, brown, yellow, black, red, Kindergarten, 1st grade, mom, dad, sister, brother, etc.)

2. Review the "common" words they may possibly use.

3. Model a lesson. Using PowerPoint read several examples of what a child might write.

Example: My name is Sam. I am 5 years old. I like to ride a bike. School is fun.

4. After reviewing a few examples, the teacher will write a story about herself, modeling how to write the sentences. Focus on having them place a period at the end of a sentence and placing capitals on their names, etc.

5. Students can possibly write a rough draft one day in centers.

6. Students will go to the computer (using KidsWork Deluxe, KidPix or MS Word Templates) and write sentences about themselves.

7. The teacher (or students) can take digital photographs and insert them into the booklet or document. The students could also use a blog to write their bios or the teacher can post those in her website. (See examples in the links below)

8. Students will read their parapgraphs and the teacher will use the flip camera to film their report.

9. The students will watch their film of their class biographies.
