Keywords: Science, Video, Flipvideo
Subject(s): Video, English/Language Arts, Science
Grades 3 through 5
School: PS 20 Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, NY
Planned By: Sheila Ramsey
Original Author: Ginger Williams, Shreveport
Goal:
The overarching goal of this project is for students to use the Flipcam to verbalize the information/knowledge gained through hands-on science activities.

Main Objectives:
TLW use five senses to make observations.
TLW provide explanations to investigated problems or questions.
TLW communicate about science in different formats, using relevant science vocabulary, supporting evidence and clear logic.

Supporting Objectives:
TLW pose questions that can be answered by using students’ own observations, scientific knowledge, and testable scientific investigations.
TLW conduct simple investigations or experiments to answer testable questions.

Description of project:
Students in a hands-on science program will remember the material better, feel a sense of accomplishment when the task is completed, and be able to transfer that experience easier to other learning situations. When students integrate communication into the hands-on activity the information has a better chance of being committed to long-term memory. This project focuses more on the communication rather than the content.

Procedure- Part 1: (All steps will be videoed by the students using their Flipcams.)
1. Students will use the scientific process to pose questions about the science activity and develop a hypothesis.
2. The students will plan and conduct investigation.
3. Students will record their hypothesis and the reasoning they used to develop their prediction.
4. As they are conducting the investigation, the student will film the procedure and explain them in detail.
5. After the experiments, the students will analysis their data and explain their findings. This makes them connect the investigation to the content.

Procedure – Part 2
1. Use the video footage for groups to share their findings with each other. Compare the results of each group.
2. The students will watch the video to determine why there might have been differences in the data.
a. Were the procedures done correct?
b. Did the students understand the content?
c. Were they able to analyze the data and draw correct conclusions?
3. This allows them to learn not only form their experiences but also form the experiences of the other groups in the class.

Procedure – Part 3
1. Using segment from all the groups, a video will be compile they explains the process, content, data, and conclusions.
2. These videos will be stored online for students to access for review or reteaching.
Comments
A chinese proverb says," What I hear I forget, what I see I remember, what I do I understand." I think instead it should read, What I hear I forget, what I see I remember, what I do I understand, what I teach I commit to memory."
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Although the purpose of this grant is to promote science the procedures could be applied to any subject area.
Follow-Up
These Flipvideos will be used on every investigation done through out the school year by 110 third grade students and 18 fourth grade students. They will also be taken on field trips to record student experiences
