Grades 1 through 6
School: D Moody Elementary School, Overland Park, KS
Planned By: Dianne Thomann
Original Author: Dianne Thomann, Overland Park
Materials/Resources: Open Court Book, iPod Touch, microphone, extra headphones, whisper phones

Time Frame: 1 lesson, 30 minutes

Instructional Elements:

Lesson: This is a whole group and individual reading lesson using our Open Court reading series. It could be used with any Open Court story during the first, second, or third day. This particular lesson is meant to be done on the second day of the story. Beforehand, I will create a podcast or recording of the story selection and the comprehension questions I want them to answer.

As a group, we will summarize the story from the day before. I will ask if we answered all our questions from the day before or if there are still some unanswered. I will also ask if there are new questions. We will choral read the story selection for about 15 minutes and discuss our comprehension strategies for the week.

Then I will pair the students up and give each pair an iPod. Students will read along with the iPods, answering comprehension questions and finding vocabulary and Word Knowledge words as they read. Each pair may work together to answer the questions and find the words. This will also take about 15 minutes.

Adaptations:
• Intermediate readers will need to read using their whisper phones in one ear and the iPod earphone in the other.
• ELL students can listen and follow along in their book.
• Low readers can also listen and follow along in their book.
• High readers can record the next part of the story on their iPod to practice their fluency and expression.
