Preparation At the beginning of the school year, students will take a learning styles inventory assessment to determine their own learning style.
At the beginning of each unit in science, students are given a list of the goals and objectives for that unit of study and a list of key vocabulary that they will be learning.
Review Activity At the end of each unit, students will be given an assignment to review (or learn) the key vocabulary. Students must complete one task according to their learning style and demonstrate their understanding of 10 vocabulary words from the featured unit of study. In addition, students must design an interactive review game that can be played on the Smart board. For the visual learner, students will collect pictures that relate to the vocabulary words on their school campus or at home using a digital camera. Students will create a photostory or electronic "picture book" using the pictures. They will present their photostory and have students guess which vocabulary words are represented during their "story." The auditory learner will be asked to write a song or advertisement jingle using the vocabulary words. They will sing their song, use a flip camera to record their song, or "hire" another student to sing for them. Students can use the Ipod to assist them in writing their songs. The tactile learner will design their own game board or discovery kit relating to the vocabulary. Students will become the game hosts for their game or the scientist for the discovery kit and the class will rotate in order to play all games. These activities will be used to review before the summative assessment. Students will present their products and review games to their peers. If funding and time allows, a parent night will be planned each semester for parents to view the products and play the review games with their children.
Evaluation Students will be evaluated according to creativity of product, proficiency of content knowledge (vocabulary), presentation of product, and quality of interactive review game. The audience, peers and parents, will be expected to complete an evaluation of the products as well. |

Comments |
Vocabulary development is essential in learning science and any other subject. Recognizing the different learning styles of students and giving diverse opportunities to learn and the technology to make it more meaningful will help students become more successful. |
Cross-Curriculum Ideas |
This project can be used in all content areas. Vocabulary development is important in all subjects and students need more than worksheets to learn vocabulary. This project can be used in any classroom. |
Follow-Up |
After students complete their vocabulary products, a summative assessment will be given. This will determine if any reteaching is needed or modifications need to be made to the lesson. |
