To High School and Beyond!
(project for 8th grade TEAMS)

Your future begins with YOU and the decisions that you make today and thereafter. What classes you choose, what after school jobs you have, what you do in your spare time-these all shape your future. You are the captain of your ship!
There are thousands upon thousands of careers to choose from (and news ones get created each day). How do you figure out which careers you might like to try? It takes some thought, creativity, and research. Middle school is a time of great exploration and discovery and hopefully TEAMS will get your mind wheels turning.

Objective: to learn about yourself in an effort to steer your thoughts towards a possible career path

Procedures:

Part 1 – Cost of Living: When we choose great careers, sometimes our choices send us to places other than Columbia, SC. However, living in other cities can be more or less costly than where you currently reside. This portion of the project, gives you the opportunity to explore various cities and compare the cost of real estate in one city versus another. You maybe surprised what you get for the money!
Cost of Living Project – Mansion, Big House, Shack or Somewhere In-Between

Overview: You have landed a job in your dream city. You choose whatever that city is and complete the rest of this project.

The employer has offered to give you the funding to relocate. Now your task is to find a place to live that fits within your budget. For the purposes of this project, we will only focus on housing, but keep in mind other living expenses you incur each month in addition to your rent or mortgage.

Task: If you haven’t done so already, research how much money one could expect starting out in your chosen career. Take the higher number of the salary range and use that for the basis of how much you can spend on housing.

Research the current real estate cost for your city and place that amount on the chart provided (chart located in GroupView folder). Also include on the chart what type of housing is available for the amount of money you have to spend. What is included in the house, apartment or condo? How many bed/bathrooms? What is the neighborhood like? What is the square footage of the home? These are just some questions to get you thinking.

Project Report: Once you have inputted several living choices, write a report explaining where you chose to live and why. Discuss the type of home you would purchase and how much it would cost. Did you save money? What would you do with it?

Part 2 – 10 Years from Now: In 10 years from now, you will be between the ages of 23 to 25. Where do you see yourself at this time? What do you aspire to have in life? Did you go to college or technical school? Where would you live? What career path did you take?
All these questions and more will be answered throughout this multimedia presentation. You are more than welcome to integrate pictures, sounds, or your own vocal narration to bring your presentation to life. This portion of the project can be completed using any multimedia application of your choice (PowerPoint, PhotoStory or Movie Maker).

1. Your personal data – name, age (in ten years), date of birth, parents and siblings
2. Education – Where did you go to school? What did you major in? If you didn’t go to college, what training or preparation did you have for your chosen career? What degree did you receive, if applicable?
3. Career – What decisions did you make about your career? Will you be working in that field in 10 years? What would you job responsibilities be at that point?
4. Address – Where will you be living? (remember the cost of living???) Describe the area. What kind of home?
5. Your ride – How are getting around? Describe your mode of transportation.
6. Family – Do you plan to married? What will your family life be like?

Part 3 – Ideal Life: Here is where you let your imagination run wild. What is the life you dream about? Is pretty much like the life you’ll have in 10 years or is it that life plus more success in your career? You will display your ideal life through Movie Maker. You will cover most of the same information from the 10 years presentation except through images and you want to make each portion the ideal life you desire.

1. Your personal data – name, age (how old do you want to be by the time you accomplish your dreams), date of birth, parents and siblings
2. Talents/Gifts – what you are naturally good at (could have been a learned skill also)
3. Career – What would you job responsibilities be at that point?
