Begin with a Jokers Cafe
After many shared and interactive experiences with fluency strategies students will work in pairs practicing rereading several self selected jokes. Students will work on accuracy, rate, and expression to sound like talking. Immediately after reading students will listen to their own recordings, offering feedback or reflection based on a class created fluency rubric. Once the student feels like the recording is "just like talking" they are encouraged to share their recording with five "listeners" from around the school (examples: teachers, students, support teachers, parents, administrators etc...) and collect signatures and feedback using the same students created rubric. After all students have collected all signatures we will use the Flip Share software to create a class movie of fluent readings.
In order to make re-readings engaging and motivating to readers a central focus of this unit will be centered around one genre and theme such as relationships, systems, structures, or character traits such as honesty, compassion, etc... This particular theme focuses on tone and author's purpose when telling jokes. Students will practice delivery techniques and correct pausing to gain their audiences attention.
We will follow this process using poems, short stories, and facts from non-fiction text increasing fluency reading with expression, rate and accuracy each week. Students fluency is monitored using DIBELS.
