Additionalactivities:

There is a new trend in reading: book trailers. It seems that lately book trailers are popping up on all of the video sharing sites. The book trailers give students just enough information to leave them wanting more.

A bookcast is a ONE-TAKE (no editing) short film that can take many forms, but is always used to encourage people to read the book. Bookcasts are also known as book trailers or video booktalks-- basically less fancy versions of the videos that Scholastic sends along with the Book Fair to encourage kids to buy/read the books at the fair.

“Bookcast”: Making a Book Trailer for A Mango Shaped Space
What is a “bookcast” or “book trailer”? A bookcast is like a movie preview, only for a book. You can be as creative as you want to be, but your bookcast has to make other people want to read the book. Don’t give away the ending, but try to reveal the “good parts” to make people want to read more!
Ideas (Use one of these, or CREATE YOUR OWN!)
• Do a skit of an important scene in the book.
• Have one person read dramatically from the book while other people act it out.
• Draw pictures or write words and film those!
• Sing a little song or rap about the book.
• Do a pretend “news story” about the book.
• Have someone in the group play a dramatic song on their instrument while showing pictures or reading.
RULES
1. You have ONE class period to plan your bookcast and ONE to film. Don’t waste time!
2. You will need one person to be the CAMERA OPERATOR, so that person cannot be in the video if you decide to do a skit.
3. Don’t give away the ending!
4. BE CREATIVE!

RUBRIC
Your bookcast should be
Creative (25 points)
Persuasive (25 points)
Informative (25 points)
Presentable (25 points)
