Students will have a bell ringer where they respond to the following question: How does culture affect storytelling?

After students have had a chance to record their thoughts in their journal, they will be asked to select a story that we have read in class or one they have read independently. We will connect our classroom to a classroom overseas using SKYPE. Our students will introduce themselves and the other class will do the same. Each class will have a chance to tell/read 2 stories. We will discuss together (with the other class) how the stories selected were similar and how they were different.

After we end our SKYPE session with the other class, students will then complete a ven diagram on comparing their stories with the stories told by the students in the other class.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
While this lesson features Language Arts content, it also encompasses Geography/Social Studies as students will learn about the cultural background, location and other pertinent information about the area in which the other class is from. They will also be responsible for sharing information about our area.
Follow-Up
Students will search for other short storie written from a different cultural perspective. We will analyze these stories the same way we analyze stories from our own cultural background.
