During African American history month, fourth graders use the Internet to research African American authors of books for children. They also research the Coretta Scott King Award which is presented annually by the American Library Association. They identify books, they read reviews and then they select and read the book of their choice.

Once they have read the book, they write a script for a podcast. They have a simple sheet of items they must include in the script: name of the author, title of the book, short synopsis of the book and one or two key phrases from a published review. Then they must read their favorite page or scene from the book—something that will catch the interest of others. Finally, they need to give their thumbs up reason for why someone should read the book.

After rewriting the script, they can tape it and then put in music and sound effects.

When they are finished we have a podcast party and share our products with the other classes.
