School: Bel Air Elementary School, Woodbridge, VA
Planned By: Heather Caplan
Original Author: Heather Caplan, Woodbridge
Student Objectives:
-Students will conduct a research project on a vertebrate or invertebrate.
-They will decide within that category, which animal they would like to research.
-They need to use list information about the animal depicting, where it lives, what it eats, what it looks like, etc.
-Students will use Tool Factory Movie Maker to create a movie about the animal.

Step one-
In fifth grade, students learn about the Animal Kingdom. Animals can be either vertebrates(fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals) or invertebrates(sponges, cnidarians, annelids, mollusks, echinoderms, and arthropods). The students need to choose a category either vertebrate/invertebrate and pick an animal that represents that category.

Step two-
Students will then research their animals by using books, encyclopedias, and the internet.

Step three-
They will fill out an answer sheet depicting the information as follows:
1. My animal is either a vertebrate or invertebrate
2. The type of animal I am
3. Where my animal lives
4. What my animal eats
5. List 5 interesting facts
6. Pictures of my animal

Step four-
After students research and write down the information, they will then use Tool Factory Movie Maker to create a movie about their animal. Each slide of the movie will answer the requirements of the project. Students can use sound effects to describe the sounds their animals can make if it applies.

Step five-
Finally, students will present their movies to the class to teach students if a certain animal is a vertebrate or an invertebrate.
