School: Wisconsin-Dells High School, Wisc Dells, WI
Planned By: Amanda Levzow-Seichter
Original Author: Amanda Levzow, Wisc Dells
Students use the information they gained from my Advanced Biotechnology course to choose the top 5-10 topics in biotechnology that demonstrate the importance to this area of science (can be used for any course/topic/area of study).
Next they need to do additional research in each area to determine how that area has affected our lives. They also need to locate pictures/video clips that demonstrate this area of science.
Once they have completed their research, they will use Windows Movie Maker ( you can use any video software- this is just the one we have available at our school) and create a short 2 minute commercial deomstrating the importance of biotechnology. They are encouraged to use many graphics/visuals, as well as text to promote biotechnology and encourage students to enroll in the Biotechnology courses offerred at our school.

Comments
The students really go "into" this project and spent a lot of time perfecting their commercials. They were excited when their commercial was played on the announcements.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Could be used to incorporate Mass Media and Video Productions topics, as well as the science topics covered.
Follow-Up
Students can vote on the "best" commercial- makes it a challenge for students to develop the best commercial. Also, we have video announcements every morning, so we aired the "winning" commercials on the announcements.
Could have students research other avenues of technology that could be used to communicate with the public about science.
