Subject: Science, Grade 5 Learning Goals/ Objective: Content Standard: SC.5.N.1.1: Define a problem, use appropriate reference materials to support scientific understanding, plan and carry out scientific investigations of various types such as: systematic observations, experiments requiring the identification of variables, collecting and organizing data, interpreting data in charts, tables, and graphics, analyze information, make predictions, and defend conclusions.
Skill: Students will work collaboratively to collect appropriate data, evaluate the meaning of those data, and communicate this evaluation.
Lesson Lead in: Create excitement by informing the students that this week they will be conducting an experiment and using technology to record their data. Students will use laptops to research information on bacteria using online encyclopedias and the web. Review & discuss pre-established expectations regarding safety procedures, proper Flip Video usage and working collaboratively.
Performance Task: Students will form into groups of 4. Each group will be given gloves, goggles, 4 sterile, agar prepped petri dishes and 3 Q-tips. They will be asked to collect 3 bacteria samples via swab from 3 different classroom locations. They will mark the petri dish according to the location from where they swabbed the Q-tip. One petri dish will remain with no sample an act as the control for the experiment. Each day, for 1 week, students will create a voice-over video of the samples (using the Flip Video Camera) while observing the bacteria growth change. After the week is complete, students can use Imovie or another program to combine the videos into a short series of clips. The will then communicate the data in an oral presentation and show their completed data video.
Technology Connection: Students will use laptops, the Flip Video Camera, Imovie or similar software and the Promethean Board to display the video.

This project really gets the students excited about experimentation. There is an added benefit because the students learn first hand the reasons why repeated trials, sharing results and comparing variables to a control are so important. |
