Students in Latin III and IV class have a standard that focuses on art and how it is an outgrowth of the literature of the ancient world. Students will have gained a vast background in traditional pieces of art based on the works of Ovid, Hesiod and other authors from ancient Greece and Rome. They will select one work of art or a series of pieces to research the artist, provenance, time period, etc. Students will then bring that piece of art to life by either creating a podcast or a video of the origin of that piece of art or their historical fiction on the origin. Students can assume the roles of the artist and demonstrate how the story impacted and influenced that artist to create his or her masterpiece. Podcasts will include sound, video and audio. Videos will include costumes and props. Students will have to write a script in order to prepare to produce the video or podcast. Scripts must utilize the information that they have discovered in their research on that piece of art AND some of the Latin words from the stories that they read in the target language. The recording--video or podcast--will contain both Latin and English words so that it can be used by World Language learners or other learners. Students can use Windows Movie Maker to complete the project as they will have had other smaller projects utilizing the same program as a scaffold to complete this larger project. This project can serve as a unit test or as a final exam. |

Cross-Curriculum Ideas |
Students can network with the art students in order to help them complete the assignment The art teacher can be utilized for special sessions in order to discuss some of the art that the students choose from the ancient world. The English and drama teacher can watch and rehearse short scenes with the students before recording. |
Follow-Up |
Students will watch their classmates' videos and use a prescribed comment sheet to evaluate the work of their peers.
Students can also create a persuasive ad campaign for a particular piece of art.
Students could create a brochure for a hypothetical museum that may hold all of the pieces of art from the projects. |
