During our Chapter 4 unit, the students learn Spanish vocabulary for restaurant interactions and food creation (recipes). As an assessment tool, they are given the option of three different scenarios to create a video skit: (1) a cooking show, (2) a bad restaurant experience, or (3) a family dinner gone bad.

Working together as a group, they choose their scenario, write out lines (all in Spanish of course!), block their "skit", dress up in costumes, and record their skit on video. They can run their scene as many times as necessary until they are happy with their final product. The students are encouraged to bring in humor using their knowledge of Spanish! They work together to edit their film into a final finished product. Many of them add in extras to enhance their videos like soundtrack music or background noises, scrolling text and transition effects.

On the day their projects are due, they introduce their scenario to the class and then show their videos. Bloopers on the end are always a very fun addition! In the past, I have been extremely impressed with the products that get shown on due day.

My students have really enjoyed this project in the past. They really take ownership of making a great product. I really enjoy it because they are taking the Spanish that they have learned and are using it for something that they write and create; it really makes it their own!
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
I am sure that this type of skit-video project could be implemented into any curriculum where the students are able to create a product of their own based on in class vocabulary and concepts.
Follow-Up
After viewing all of the final products, the students shoose a favorite and write a short blurb. They tell me which was their favorite skit and why. This blurb is written all in Spanish!
