Students will work as groups work in Spanish involving shopping at a market, mercado section outside a restaurant, which is full. They will write dialogue ahead of time and practice with each other, and use vocabulary presented in their worksheets and by the teacher. They will have repeated the words for the items displayed at the "market" and some may have brought items to add the market !! They browse the market to appease their hunger while waiting for a table and use Spanish expressions in their skits. They can talk about the items, or even buy some, in Spanish of course. Later the next scene will involve "sitting at the table and interacting with me, the waitress", ordering from the menu. ( This is a beginner class so my questions will have prompts they have used in class to trigger answers in Spanish). One student will have to order a sandwich and be able to describe each layer of it to the class by ingredient. The class has cut out visuals for lettuce, cheese, lunch meats, tomato, cucumbers etc and the student will pretend he is a child taking apart his sandwich explaining each section to the group--(Humor is permitted) Others in the group will order from the menus the students have previously created in a previous assignment and dress up is permitted. The rest of the class will be graded as an audience, who will respectfully listen and be quiet until their turn. I would like a student to film each group so that we can review and show this in class later for reinforcement, and further humor that will ingrain the words in students minds in a non-threatening, comfortable class environment, yet still with structure and accuracy. I would also like for the other classes to get to see the groups they missed. Students are graded for creatividad (creativity), contenido (content) , correcto (accuracy), and cooperacion (cooperation). This will also review the Adopt a Country reports and power points done last semester, and have students role play vocabulary used in travel, or in US cities where Spanish is spoken. This activity is enjoyed by all academic levels - from strugglers to gifted and talented, and includes everyone. They enjoy all the visuals I display for the market, and will have used a total of 30 different play foods, and "artesanias" or artizan items and souvenirs as they shop. |

Students love this, and everyone is able to participate in spite of the level of proficiency they have achieved. This lesson addresses an area of interest because students like foods, and want to be able to order in Spanish and relate to people in everyday situations. Students need to have a "blank page" to express their creativity occasionally because so much is given to them in a,b,c, d choice formats in tests in which everyone must have the same answer--I feel there are students who could excel in fine art areas, that often do not get as many opportunities so this lesson is a chance for them to shine. The groups use their talents and gifts as a team, wherein each is strong in an area and my goal is that they learn to cooperated and use their talents for the well being of the class. I explain to them that studies show that if students themselves teach the vocabulary a higher percentage is remembered. |
Cross-Curriculum Ideas |
Geography--I teach the location in Spanish and English of the Hispanic country of the skit, the nationality, the capital of the country, the continent and the currency, and include slides in the background, or colloquial expressions of that country. This is an area that needs to be addressed and before the students take geography their freshman year in Franklin. |
Follow-Up |
Later before testing the videos of the skits will be shown to the classes to review. This will enable any who might have been absent to see the lesson and obtain the vocabulary. This will reinforce the words in their minds again. |
