Culminating Lesson Plan~
Prep. Time: 3 weeks
Time on Task: 1 day
Involvement: 46 students, 2 teachers, Community Members and Entire Student Body as spectators, Local Press
Students must choose famous book characters from current, popular, and classic literary works. Students will research the book's author and know the character from a particular book such as J.K. Rowling and Harry Potter.
The student will prepare a one minute monologue revealing the person who created their character and how they are a pivitol to the book's plot. They must act and dress as if they are that character and be knowledgable about the character in detail. They must know supporting characters as well as any other information that will allow the audience to know that they have indeed embodied their character.
Students must create a backdrop with props to add to and enhance their character portrayal.
Students will be provided a cubical, desk top, and a tap light in order to help create their scene.
Students will be set up in a museum like setting where by other students in the school will come to view their museum display.
Students will be in the elementary gymnasium, in their cubical, with the lights out pretending to be motionless exhibits. When the museum goers (other students from various grades) tap the light in their cubical, it is their signal to come to life. Students will then present their one minute monologue as if they are the exact character from the literary work they have chosen. When they are finished, they will then tap the light, signaling to the museum goer that they have finished the exhibit.
All students will participate in the Living Museum project whether as an exhibit, as a museum currator or a docent leading students and community members through the Living Museum.
Students will also be selected to video the Living Museum in order to preserve and share the experience with others in the community and surrounding areas.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
The Living Musuem is a culmination of a year's worth of literary work in Reading as well as research strategies and writing for a purpose through Language Arts. It is also a culmination of drama and social studies through character portrayals and historical literary works.
