School: Otsego High School, Otsego, MI
Planned By: Christine Strayer
Original Author: Christine Strayer, Otsego
Students will be challenged to solve a problem solving, utilizing critical thinking. The students will watch the movie Pay it Forward as an introduction to the idea that they are capable of changing the world around them. Then, they will actively seek out the problem that they want to propose solutions for, by conducting research through multiple medias. Once they are informed about the problem, they will be required to analyze the subject, take a definite stand on the subject, attempts to convince readers to share this position by giving reasons and evidence, acknowledge readers' likely objections or questions, suggest a solution to the current “problem,”and urges action/support from the reader. Once the research paper is finalized, the next phase of action will begin.

Students will submit a proposal to take action on their proposed solutions. They will be required to suggest "actions" that will have an impact on others, whether it is in the school, the community, or at a higher level if appropriate. This is where the Flip Video will come into play. Students will be required to provide video evidence of themselves taking action, as well as create a brief video log of how the experience of taking action to solve a problem impacted themselves as well as those involved in the problem. It is hoped that these videos can be turned into a type of Public Service Announcement that can be shared with the student body of the school, as a form of celebration and motivation to get involved in the world outside of the school.
